URUGUAYAN MUSIC

TANGO
Do not miss Juan Pablo Schellemberg and his orchestra, Fugata Tango.
I can e-mail a 2Mb file to anybody interested, with samples of his music (wonderful originals and also
'covers'). He's my cousin but he is also a very talented composer, pianist, conductor and singer. He recently launched his new CD at the Cubadisco Festival in La Habana. I have a few CDs by him for sale (his previous one)

Carnival music that lingers in Montevideo year round:

CANDOMBE

{YouTubeVideo id=cHqIomHMLGM}

The candombe is by Mariana Ingold (playing keyboard).
The video shows some of the typical characters that parade in Carnival:
  • The "mama vieja and gramillero" (the old couple),
  • the "escobero", drummers and dancers.
The funny big black guy is another candombe musician called Ruben Rada. Listen to his singing close to the end of the video clip.
In Montevideo, many locals gather every Sunday with their neighbours in different suburbs to play drums
and dance in the street to the beat of candombe.

MURGA music by Jaime Roos

In Carnival (February) murgas perform in very colourful costumes.
