If you have not yet been to BA then it is almost certainly much cheaper and easier to do than you probably think! This section gives some background info.

As at December 2006 you will need $2300 for the airfare and then $500US/month will get you a very nice apartment right downtown, near great shopping. A very good idea is to stay at a Tango Guest House, you are with other dancers and you can gain a lot of local knowledge very quickly.
You should take taxis everywhere at night because walking is not always safe but they are very cheap and mostly very safe. A very long fare is 10-12 pesos ($5NZ-$6NZ) but from downtown most fares to dances are only 5-6 pesos. The central downtown restaurants are far more expensive than the more local places where you sit at a large table with many others and pay 6-10 pesos for a wodging great meal, washed down with a litre of Quilmes beer for 5 pesos.
Here's an article put together by Neville with tips for travellers to BA.

Hi Geoff
I have just had a quick look at the travel tips on the web site. It is really good!!! I think that the name
of the places where you can make phone calls should be called 'Locutorio'.
Talking with friends about their trip to Buenos Aires, I could not believe that they had sandwiches at
their apartment for lunch instead of going out and enjoying the wonderful and cheap food. It is great to
go for lunch to where people who are working at offices go. They have options including a main,
desert and something to drink for very little money.
And it is REAL food, cooked food, delicious food, not sandwiches or something bought at the supermarket.
People should be advised to try the REAL ice creams (no factory made), the asado for the carnivorous,
pasta like for example 'canelones', dulce de leche and flan con dulce de leche or flan con crema for desert,
pascualina (silverbeet pie), milanesas (crumbed beef schnitzel), and the list could go on and on.
See you later
Adriana
